Portland is a pretty happening town in the summer time. In a single month, there is enough going on to keep you occupied with new experiences and flavors almost every single day. If you’re new to Portland, or you just want to experience something new that Portland has to offer, there are tons of things to get you excited about the culture, the food, and the lifestyle that’s available in Portland. Here are a few Portland events in August that you just can’t miss:
There are a plethora of big-ticket music festivals happening in Portland this month – enough so that aficionado’s of just about every genre can find something to sink their teeth into. Here are a few we felt were worth mentioning.
1)-MusicFest NW – 8/27-28 @Tom McCall Park
2)-Warped Tour – 8/18 @ Portland Expo Center
Every 90’s skater teen’s dream festival, Warped Tour is a long standing staple in alternative music. Warped is a nationally touring musical festival, sponsored by Vans shoes, which features punk and alt-rock bands of both contemporary and pre-internet fame. Big names include Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, and Sum-41.
3)- Willamette Country Music Festival – 8/12-15 @ Brownsville Festival Grounds
This one’s a little outside of Portland, in Brownsville, but if you’re in Portland and you love country music, you’ve simply got to make it to the Willamette Country Music Festival. There’s food, camping, fun for the whole family, and by golly, a helluva lot of country music! Big names include the Zac Brown Band and Keith Urban!
Concerts in the City
Aside from bigger music festivals in Portland, there are a number of weekly concerts going on across town. Sometimes, if you can’t make it to a bigger show, concerts in the city, like these, are a great alternative for getting out and catching some live music. Here are a few city shows happening in Portland this month:
Concerts in the park – All month long @ Various Parks throughout town
Portland’s Concerts in the Park series is a longstanding tradition within the city. Portland has been putting on concerts in city parks since 1901…110+ years! Starting in mid-July and continuing through the end of August, there are shows almost every day of the week in parks all across town. Concerts in the square – Every Tuesday 8/2-30 @ Pioneer Courthouse Square
Noon Tunes, or Concerts in the Square, starts in early July and goes through all of August, at the Portland Courthouse Square. The Concerts in the Square are awesome weekend activities if you’re looking for some fun near downtown. The concerts in the park are also your best bet if you’re trying to catch some local musical talent in Portland this August. For a full list of performers, go here.
Concerts on Main Street – Every Wed. 8/3-9/7 @ Main Street, between Southwest Broadway & Park Avenue
The 11th annual Music on Main concert series is currently underway and goes through the first week of September. The free concerts are held in downtown Portland on Main Street, between Southwest Broadway & Park Avenue, next to Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The 2016 series features country, jazz, blues and world music including North Indian bhangra and cumbia music. The free concerts are open to the public and run from 5 pm to 7 pm and tickets are not required! For a list of performers, go here.
Nothing beats a watching a classic movie outdoors in the summertime, and they’re are plenty of spots to catch an outdoor movie in Portland this summer. Outdoor movies are the perfect summertime activity, and here are the best spots to catch one in town this month.
Movies in the park – 8/2-9/10 @ Multiple Locations throughout town
This summer marks 10 years for Portland’s Movies in the Park. What started as 13 a movie schedule has grown into a 46 film run hosted at over 40 parks across town. There’s a healthy mix of newer titles (Star Wars: The Force Awakens plays on 8/14 and 8/27) and some classics (Jaws is on 8/18, and The Wizard Of Oz is on 9/4). Movies on a roof – 7/28-8/25 @ Hotel deLuxe
The downtown rooftop cinemas, hosted on the rooftop of Hotel deLuxe’s parking structure, is another longstanding outdoor cinema spot in Portland. This summer, they’re celebrating their 12th year! The Rooftop cinema happens every Thursday this month, there are food and drink available, and live music before the movie! For a list of movies they’re playing this month, go here!
Movies in the square – Every Thurs 8/5-8/19 @ Pioneer Courthouse Square
Rounding out the Portland Summer outdoor movie scene is Flicks on the Bricks, another summer event put on by the Pioneer Courthouse Square. Every Friday this month, they’re showing a classic flick on a gigantic inflatable screen in Pioneer Square. Movies in the Square is awesome because it’s totally free and attendees are encouraged to remake the square as their own living room by bringing chairs, bean bags, pillows, and blankets. Organic Beer Fest – 8/25-28 @ Overlook Park
Designed to raise awareness about organic beer and sustainable living, the Organic Beer Fest serves up 55 organic beers, ciders & mead from around the nation. From summery Saisons to rich and hearty stouts, at the Organic Beer Fest, there are beers to please every palate. There’s also live music, food, sustainability-oriented vendors and non-profits, and a children’s area, all in a beautiful park overlooking NW Portland.
Vancouver Brewfest – 8/12-14 @ Esther Short Park in Downtown Vancouver
Vancouver Brewfest brings together and celebrates craft beer, cider, and mead from around the country to provide festival goers with the opportunity to sample some of the best-brewed beverages in current production. Plus, the festival benefits a few fantastic charities, like Northwest Battle Buddies (which provides service animals to wounded veterans).
Are you a foodie? Whether or not you’re comfortable with the term ‘foodie’ is beside the point – if you’re after some special, delicious treats in Portland this month, you’re in luck! There are a bunch of festivals in Portland this month where you can try new and exciting offerings or revel in some of your favorite classics. Here are three you can’t miss:
Grilled Cheese invitational – 8/26 @ Eastburn
Yes, you read that right…an invitational Grilled Cheese competition! Only in Portland, right? In fact, this marks the third annual Grilled Cheese competition held by East Burn, a uniquely special neighborhood public house in, you guessed, the East Burnside Neighborhood of Portland! The competition will feature nine vendors serving up grilled cheeses to be judged by the attendees. Who will win? Only the most delicious will make it through. Plus, the event benefits Call to Safety (formerly Portland Women’s’ Crisis Line).
Bite of Oregon – 8/12-14 @Tom McCall Waterfront Park
This year marks the 33rd annual Bite of Oregon Festival! From the coast to the Cascades to the canyons, the Bite of Oregon is a wonderful celebration of the entire state, its food, its people and its extraordinary quality of life. This year’s theme is Oregon’s Bounty. The festival will have an assortment of savory and sweet food offerings to satisfy your palate, along with the typical wide array of restaurants, food carts, dessert purveyors and more than 20 Oregon craft beers and wines! Price range for restaurants, food carts, and dessert vendors are typically $2-$9 per item.
Garlic Festival – 8/12-14 @ Jessie Mays Community Park in North Plains, OR
Ah yes, Street Fairs. Nothing makes for a better Sunday summer activity then hitting the morning street fair for some locally made trinkets or locally sourced treats. And, Portland is the ideal town for the street fair aficionado – there are always a ton going on, and the community really embraces them, which makes them more organized and well-attended. Here are a few street fairs in Portland you’ve got to make it to this month:
Alberta Street Fair – 8/13 @ NE Alberta Street between NE 10th – 30th Avenues
The Alberta Street Fair features an eclectic mix of activities and events that you’ll only find on Alberta Street. The goal of the fair is to showcase the best of the Alberta Street community. The event includes entertainment, music, vendors, food and drink for people of all ages. Hosted by Alberta Main Street, the Alberta Street Fair continues to be one of Portland’s most beloved neighborhood street festivals, drawing more than 25,000 people annually.
Hawthorne Street Fair 8/28 @ Hawthorne Blvd from 31st Ave to 41st Ave.
The Hawthorne Street Fair is a great opportunity to glimpse the food and shopping scene in the Hawthorne area of Portland. Hawthorne Boulevard has a long history of tradition and is known for its eclectic mix of boutiques shops, cafes, food carts, bars, restaurants and music related destinations. Hawthorne continues to be a thriving community of residents, business owners, and visitors, and the community welcomes you to visit the neighborhood and join the celebration!
Fremont Fest 8/6 @ Beaumont Village
Fremont Fest is an annual street fair hosted by Beaumont Village. It consists of a kid, bike and pet parade starting at 10AM. Then, a pub crawl at some of Beaumont Villages best breweries and restaurants. There’s also a ton kids activities and of course great shopping in the streets! A perfect place to get a nice slice of Portland lifestyle, Fremont Fest features more than 125+ vendors of handmade items, clothing, art, food and so much more.
